The Department of Nursing is one of the five (5) departments of the School of Health Sciences of the International Hellenic University (IHU). It was first established in 1973 at the Centers of Higher Technical and Vocational Education (K.A.T.E.E.) of Thessaloniki and with the establishment of the Technological Educational Institution of Thessaloniki N. 1404/83, which was subsequently renamed to ALEXANDREIO TECHNOLOGICAL EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION OF THESSALONIKI (ATEITH), it was incorporated into the Tertiary Technological Education, absorbing the Higher State School of Nurses of Thessaloniki, which had been operating since 1951 under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. By the Law 2916/2001, Government Gazette 114, all the departments of TEI were incorporated into higher education. Finally, the Department of Nursing became a university department of the School of Health Sciences of IHU according to Law 4610/2019.
The aim of the Department is to provide students with academic knowledge and skills leading to a professional and/or academic career. After their graduation they will be ready to work both in the community and hospital sector in all levels of healthcare provision.
Consequently, the Department of Nursing aims at promoting the development and transmission of scientific knowledge and skills needed through theoretical teaching, laboratory, clinical practice and applied research. The modern nurse requires a wide range of therapeutic and communication skills together with the ability to assess a situation and select the most suitable nursing care plan based upon up-to-date information and evidence based research. Nurses are responsible members of multi-disciplinary healthcare teams and they act as an advocate for the patients interests.
Since its establishment in its previous form (as the Nursing Department of KATEE) until today, the Department of Nursing has contributed more than 6700 nurses to society. Today there are almost 1100 students enrolled.
The Department of Nursing is located in Sindos (Delta Municipality) in the Alexandria Campus of the IHU, on a plot of 150 hectares, including a farm. It is co-located with the Faculties of Physiotherapy and Biomedical Sciences in a common building of two (2) floors. All spaces are located within the two-story building of IHU’s Alexander Campus.
